Are all dermal fillers the same?

One of the original non-invasive cosmetic treatments, dermal fillers have come a long way over the past decade. Once used to simply enhance the lips or cheeks, today, dermal filler is also used to define and contour your face. It’s also used to boost hydration and to improve skin texture and tone.

This is because of changes to the structure of the main ingredient in dermal filler – hyaluronic acid. It also comes down to how it’s applied. Firstly, just a recap on hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid or HA is a natural occurring substance in our bodies that is essential to keeping skin hydrated, plump and youthful. However, as we age, our supply of HA depletes, leading to volume loss and fine lines and wrinkles.

This is where dermal fillers come in to play. The type of dermal filler treatment you require comes down to your skin’s individual requirements. Here are the top three forms of dermal filler:

1. Hydrating filler

This type of dermal filler draws in water to hydrate the skin and provide a lasting glow. At Artisan, this includes our Skin Booster treatments. They are micro-injections of hyaluronic acid that are injected into the skin to hydrate and improve overall skin quality, rather than underneath the skin to enhance. Results build gradually and subtly with optimal results after three months that last up to four to six months.

2. Structural filler

This type of dermal filler contours facial structures like the chin and jaw for a more defined look. Because it’s a thicker form of hyaluronic acid, it works to stabilise and tighten the treatment area for a slimmer overall appearance.

3. Volumising filler

This is your traditional type of filler that works to smooth large creases and restore or enhance volume in key areas like the cheeks and lips. As mentioned above, they involve injecting hyaluronic acid underneath your skin to plump and enhance the treatment area. Results are visible immediately and optimal in one to two weeks. They last six to twelve months, depending on the area treated and the product prescribed.

All forms of filler will gradually and naturally degrade in the body over time and come with minimal discomfort and no downtime.
