Dermal filler vs thread lift – what’s best for me?

Dermal filler injections have long been one of our most popular treatments at Artisan and it’s not hard to see why. In less than 60 minutes, you can instantly plump and tighten your skin while reducing fine lines and wrinkles. It’s the perfect treatment for anyone seeking a more youthful complexion.

Lately though, another injectable treatment is fast gaining in popularity – the thread lift. The thread lift works similarly to dermal filler in that it tightens and plumps the skin. Where it differs, is that it also lifts the skin, providing a similar effect to a surgical facelift. The results are also more enduring – lasting for 12 months as opposed to six months with dermal filler injections.

So, which treatment is best for you? Firstly, a quick recap on how they work:

Dermal Filler

Dermal filler injections contain hyaluronic acid (HA). This is a naturally occurring substance in the skin that stabilises structure, attracts and binds water, and improves elasticity. HA fills the space of volume loss and stimulates skin cell renewal.

Dermal filler injections work to fill and smooth lines, wrinkles, deep folds and to improve the appearance of scars. They may also be used to restore and enhance the youthful curves of the face by adding volume to cheeks and lips and defining the natural contours of the jaw, chin and nose.

Thread Lift

Thread lifts involve the placement of dissolvable threads underneath the skin. The threads contain poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which is naturally broken down by the body over time. Once inserted under the skin, the threads are fixed to certain points of the face and then pulled upwards to immediately lift the skin.

The treatment works to gradually stimulate new collagen production, resulting in a lifted, plumper and more youthful complexion. It’s ideal for reducing jowls and strong nasolabial folds and for lifting drooping and sagging skin. It can also even out the jawline and restore lost facial volume.

Which treatment is right for you comes down to how significantly your skin is showing the signs of ageing. If you have drooping and sagging skin then a thread lift is going to provide a better result than dermal filler as it will help to lift and tighten. However, if you’re simply struggling with volume loss around your cheeks then dermal filler injections are your best bet.
