Cleansing is one of the most important steps in your skincare routine.
It goes without saying that cleansing is the first step to clearer and more refreshed skin. It removes the buildup of dirt, impurities and excess oil and allows your skincare products to be absorbed more effectively into your pores for a hydrated complexion.
We chat to Rachel, Dermal Therapist from our Artisan Balmain clinic for her tips to make sure you’ve got your cleansing routine sorted below.

FIND THE RIGHT PRODUCT
From foams and balms, to oils, gels and milks, choosing a cleanser can be confusing. We recommend asking your Artisan clinician to help find the product that is right for your skin. A simple way to tell if you’ve found the right cleanser is to see how your skin feels immediate after cleansing. “It should feel calm and comforted, not tight and dry,” says Rachel.
CREATE YOUR SCHEDULE, AND STICK TO IT!
With the right cleanser it’s likely you’ll only need to cleanse at the end of the day. The best tip we can give you is to do it every night before going to bed! As for the morning, the only reasons you may need to cleanse is if your skin is excessively oily or if you have exercised to the point of sweating. Otherwise, simply rinsing your face with lukewarm water in the mornings before you apply your SPF and moisturiser is all you need to do.
TO DOUBLE CLEANSE OR NOT TO DOUBLE CLEANSE
Yes! Double-cleansing is necessary if you have been wearing make-up, thick sunscreens or have been in a polluted environment. As the name suggests this technique involves cleansing twice for a more thorough result. Artisan dermal therapist Rachel suggests using a cleansing balm or oil to remove surface dirt and grime with a soft cloth to help lift makeup. Follow that with a second cleanse using your regular cleanser then gently pat your skin dry (don’t rub!).
NOT TOO ROUGH
Cleansing too aggressively can be just as problematic as not cleansing at all. It’s important not to overdo the frequency of your cleansing or use products that are too harsh for your skin. “One of the signs you might be overdoing it is dehydration, a dry or dull complexion or red and irritated patches especially around the nose and mouth” says Rachel.
