PRP for hair rejuvenation is a simple and safe treatment that involves drawing, processing and reinjecting a small amount of your own blood, which delivers growth factors that stimulate hair follicles to extend their lifecycle and prevent early regression as well as improve hair volume and thickness.

PRP for hair rejuvenation is used to treat the scalp.


Results are visible within four to six monthsSix treatments are recommended for best results. Regular treatments will help to maintain results.  

  • Cease taking oral corticosteroids (e.g. prednisone) two weeks prior  
  • Cease taking any non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory medications (e.g. ibuprofen, Voltaren, Celebrex, Mobic), ten days prior 
  • Avoid or minimise alcohol consumption, blood-thinning medications (e.g. aspirin) and supplements that increase bruising (e.g. fish oils, ginseng, omega 3 and 6, vitamin E, multi-vitamins), one week prior
  • Cease any topical medications and high strength cosmeceuticals containing vitamin A, retinol and glycolic acid, one week prior
  • Avoid microdermabrasion, aggressive peels and exfoliants two days prior
  • On the day of treatment, drink at least one litre of water and refrain from excessive exercise to assist with blood collection

Note: do not cease prescribed medications without first consulting with your general practitioner.  


Prior to your first treatment, your clinician will consult with you to assess your suitability for PRP for hair rejuvenation and discuss any concerns or questions you may have.

The procedure involves a small amount of blood being drawn, which is then centrifuged to separate the components. The platelet rich plasma component is then administered to the treatment area via a series of injections. The injections may sting for a few seconds. A numbing agent may be applied 15 minutes prior to minimise discomfort.


Anyone who: 

  • Has a platelet disorder and / or blood disorder 
  • Is currently undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatment 
  • Has an acute and chronic infection  
  • Has skin disease  
  • Is a smoker 
  • Has liver infection 
  • Has a severe systemic or metabolic condition/ disorder
  • Is undergoing anti‐coagulation therapy
  • Has received an injection of long acting steroids at the PRP injection site within the past six weeks
  • Is pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Is under the age of 18 years

If you are unsure, contact your clinic.

  • Bleeding at the injection and/or blood collection site, which is usually resolved within the first 24 hours   
  • Tenderness, pinkness/redness and increased warmth at the treatment area, which is usually resolved within four days     
  • Bruising at the injection and/or blood collection site is usually resolved within three to five days    


  • Refrain from washing your hair for the first 12 hours. This will allow the platelets to activate and commence the skin rejuvenation process.    
  • Refrain from strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours 
  • Take paracetamol and/or codeine if required, but avoid aspirin for two days  
  • Avoid supplements that may increase bruising (e.g. fish oil) for two days  
  • Avoid inflammatory medication (e.g. Nurofen), topical gels (e.g. Voltaren) and oral steroids (e.g. Prednisone) for ten days
