Acne
Acne, breakouts, congestion, large pores and other skin concerns can affect people at any age. If not managed appropriately, they may contribute to further skin issues such as redness, hyperpigmentation, scarring and inflammation. At Artisan Aesthetic Clinics, we offer a range of treatments that may be suitable for those with acne-prone skin.
Possible Causes of Acne
Acne can develop when sebaceous glands produce excess oil and skin cell turnover becomes irregular, leading to congestion such as blackheads, whiteheads or cysts. Genetics, hormones and certain external factors may influence the severity of breakouts. Changes in hormonal activity can increase oil production, while congestion provides an environment for bacteria such as Propionibacterium acnes, which may contribute to redness and inflammation.

What Happens in the Skin When Acne Forms?
Acne develops when several processes occur at once beneath the skin’s surface. While breakouts can look different from person to person, they often begin inside the pore.
Excess Sebum
Sebaceous glands produce sebum, an oil that helps protect and hydrate the skin. In acne-prone skin, these glands may become overactive, leading to excess oil that can contribute to congestion.
Blocked Pores
When sebum combines with dead skin cells, pores can become blocked. This creates an environment where comedones may form, including blackheads and whiteheads.
Bacteria and Inflammation
Blocked pores may allow bacteria to multiply, which can trigger inflammation. This is often what leads to red, tender lesions or deeper breakouts. The severity and frequency of inflammation can influence the type of acne and the approach required for treatment.
At Artisan Aesthetic Clinics, we take time to understand what is happening within your skin before recommending any acne treatment pathway.
Types of Acne
Acne can present in several forms, and identifying the type is an important step in selecting appropriate acne treatments.
Common types of acne include:
- Blackheads – Open clogged pores with a dark surface
- Whiteheads – Closed clogged pores beneath the skin
- Papules – Small, inflamed bumps without pus
- Pustules – Inflamed lesions containing fluid
- Nodules – Larger, deeper bumps that may be painful
- Cystic acne – Deep inflammatory breakouts that can affect larger areas
Different types may require different management strategies, especially for clients with persistent or acne-prone skin.
