Skin Laxity
Skin laxity (sometimes referred to as sagging or loose skin) is a common concern that can affect both the face and body over time. At Artisan Aesthetic Clinics, we take a medically led and personalised approach to addressing skin laxity. Book an initial consultation.
What is skin laxity?
Skin laxity refers to the loosening of the skin due to a gradual loss of firmness and elasticity. It is a natural part of the ageing process, where the skin becomes less able to “snap back” into place after being stretched, often resulting in a thinner or crepey texture.
What causes skin laxity?
Skin laxity develops as a result of structural changes within the skin and underlying tissue. As we age, the body produces less collagen and elastin, two key components responsible for maintaining plump and resilient skin.
Besides ageing, other factors can contribute to skin laxity, including:
- Weight changes — Rapid or significant weight loss can leave excess loose skin
- Pregnancy — Stretching of the skin during pregnancy can affect its ability to retract fully
- Sun exposure — UV damage can break down collagen and impact skin texture over time
- Smoking — May impair blood flow and contribute to changes in skin quality and tissue structure
- Genetics — Influences how the skin ages and how quickly laxity develops
Common areas of loose skin
Skin laxity may appear in different areas of the face and body:
- Jawline and lower face
- Chin and neck
- Stomach
- Thighs
- Upper arms
How to address skin laxity
Addressing skin laxity can involve a combination of lifestyle measures and targeted treatments. For mild laxity or to help prevent further changes, prioritising sun protection, targeted skincare and a balanced diet can support overall skin health.
For more noticeable concerns, non-invasive skin treatments, such as radiofrequency or other energy-based technologies, may be discussed with a dermal clinician.
